Srinagar, July 09 : Health & Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Wednesday said that the shortage of doctors in healthcare institutions, including GMC Baramulla, remains a challenge but efforts are underway to address it.
She said that the government has already taken steps to improve doctor availability, including the recent appointment of 500 new doctors who are being posted to remote areas to strengthen patient care.
She said the issue of insufficient senior medical staff during emergency situations affects patient outcomes, especially when the first point of contact is an inexperienced doctor. She said this concern is being looked into and measures are being taken gradually.
Speaking about GMC Baramulla, she said various demands raised by the local administration and public, such as the requirement of a back lab, MRI facility, and other essential equipment have been addressed in the state budget. She said these upgrades are aimed at improving treatment for heart-related conditions and diagnostic services within the facility.
She said that some new doctors have already joined the college recently and more appointments are being made to improve patient services. She added that while deficiencies still exist, the government is working to resolve them over time.
She said that since this government took over, steps have been taken to restore work culture, especially in the health sector. She said that earlier, hospital attendance was poor and private clinics functioned during working hours, but that system has changed significantly.
She also said that patients rely on doctors after placing their trust in God, and doctors are now working with greater responsibility. She also said that the government is forming a Public Health Ministry to better manage healthcare systems across the region.
The Minister said the government is open to inquiries where complaints are submitted in writing.(KNS)
