Srinagar, July 9 : After enduring weeks of intense heatwave conditions, Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive much-needed relief as fresh spells of rainfall and a significant drop in temperatures are expected over the next 48 hours, the Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

According to officials, the upcoming change in weather is being triggered by a Western Disturbance and active monsoon winds, which are likely to bring widespread rainfall across the region, along with cooler temperatures well below the seasonal average.

“A spell of rain and cooler weather is expected across many parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days,” a senior MeT official told KNS. “The system may also lead to intense showers and cloudbursts in some areas.”

The official warned of possible gusty winds and hailstorms during this period, especially in hilly and vulnerable areas. Authorities have advised people living in flood-prone or landslide-prone zones to remain cautious, as sudden heavy showers could lead to waterlogging, flash floods, or disruption of transport services.

Over the past several weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures crossing historical highs. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 37°C, breaking a 72-year-old record, while other parts of the Valley also witnessed unusually hot and dry weather.

The extreme heat had not only affected daily life but also raised health concerns, with people experiencing heat-related illnesses and water shortages in several areas.

Farmers and orchardists in Kashmir, who were struggling due to dry conditions, have welcomed the forecast, hoping the rain will provide much-needed moisture for crops and fruit trees.

Meanwhile, the MeT department said it will continue to monitor the system and issue updates in case of any severe developments. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions.(KNS)
