Cold wave tightens grip on Kashmir as several places record sub-zero temperatures

Srinagar, Jan 22 : A cold wave continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, officials said.

According to data, the lowest temperature in the Valley was recorded at Sonamarg at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Pulwama at minus 5.8 degrees and Shopian at minus 5.4 degrees. Anantnag registered a low of minus 5.3 degrees, while Awantipora recorded minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, while the Srinagar airport logged minus 3.8 degrees.

Pampore and Sopore recorded lows of minus 5.0 degrees and minus 4.4 degrees respectively. Gulmarg, the ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded minus 3.7 degrees, Bandipora minus 2.3 degrees, and Baramulla minus 0.4 degrees Celsius.

In the Jammu region, minimum temperatures were comparatively higher, with Jammu city recording 7.2 degrees Celsius and Jammu airport 7.3 degrees. Banihal recorded a low of minus 2.2 degrees, while Bhaderwah recorded minus 1.5 degrees.
Samba registered a low of 0.1 degrees Celsius.
In the Ladakh region, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius, while Hanle was the coldest at minus 11.0 degrees. Kargil and Nubra Valley recorded minus 8.4 degrees and minus 6.1 degrees respectively.

Officials said cold conditions are likely to persist over the next few days.(KNS)
