Srinagar, Aug 18 : The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against a Budgam resident for allegedly attempting to bribe an investigating officer to influence a probe, officials said.
The chargesheet was submitted before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, against Ghulam Ahmad Ganie, son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie, a resident of Mirgund, Budgam, under FIR No. 28/2026, they said.
The accused has been booked under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 228 and 229 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a police spokesperson said.
The case originated from a written complaint alleging that Ganie, who is already an accused in an ongoing investigation under FIR No. 11/2021 of the EOW Kashmir, had transferred Rs 10,000 into the bank account of the investigating officer handling that case, the spokesperson added.
“The transfer was made with the alleged intent to bribe and unduly influence the course of the investigation,” the official said.
Upon receiving the complaint, a formal probe was initiated, during which authorities examined the allegations and collected relevant evidence, establishing the accused’s complicity, the spokesperson said.
Following the findings, the chargesheet was prepared and presented before the court for judicial determination, as per legal procedure, officials added.
The EOW has advised the public to refrain from offering or paying bribes to public servants for any favour or service. Citizens have been urged to immediately report any demand for bribes or corrupt practices to competent authorities.
“Public cooperation and timely reporting are essential to curb corruption and promote transparency and accountability,” the spokesperson said. (KNS)
