Srinagar, May 31: Two separate drowning incidents claimed lives in Kashmir on Sunday, including that of a father who jumped into a river to save his son and a three-year-old boy who fell into a canal, officials said.

In the first incident, Mohammad Ashraf Mir (42), a resident of Jawahar Nagar in Srinagar, is feared dead after being swept away by the strong currents of the Lidder River in Pahalgam.

Officials said Mir had gone to Pahalgam with his family when his son accidentally slipped into the river near Langanbal. Mir jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the boy but lost his footing and was carried away by the current. Locals managed to rescue the child safely, while a search operation involving SDRF and rafting teams was launched to trace Mir.

In another incident in north Kashmir’s Tangmarg area, a three-year-old boy, identified as Abu Bakar, died after drowning in a canal in Chhanpora.

The child was rushed to Sub-District Hospital Tangmarg after being pulled out of the water, but doctors declared him dead on arrival, officials said.(KNS).
