Srinagar, June 13 : Israel on Friday launched what it described as preemptive strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, killing key military commanders and sparking fears of a full-scale war between the two arch-rivals.

According to reports, the strikes targeted multiple high-security locations across Iran, including nuclear enrichment and missile development sites. Among those killed were Iran’s Army Chief Mohammad Bagheri and Revolutionary Guards Commander-in-Chief General Hossein Salami—marking one of the most serious military blows to Iran in decades.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the operation “Rising Lion” and said it aimed to eliminate threats to Israel’s survival. “We have struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear program. This operation will continue as long as necessary,” he said in a video message.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, warning of “harsh punishment” for Israel. An Iranian security source said Tehran’s response would be “harsh and decisive”.

Following the strikes, Israel declared a state of emergency. Defence Minister Israel Katz urged citizens to follow safety instructions, warning of a possible retaliatory missile and drone attack. Military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said troops have been deployed across all borders and are on high alert.

Meanwhile, Iran and Iraq have closed their airspace, and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport has suspended all flights.

US President Donald Trump said Washington had no role in the Israeli action and urged Iran not to target American personnel or interests in the region. However, he reiterated that Iran must completely abandon its nuclear ambitions.(KNS)
