Srinagar, Oct 27 : Jammu and Kashmir suffered massive damage to more than 15,000 houses and structures during recent floods and cloudbursts, with the government disbursing over Rs 52 crore in compensation so far, the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction has informed the Assembly.

In a written reply to a question by MLA Nizam-ud-din Bhat, the department said both Jammu and Kashmir divisions witnessed heavy losses to private and public property, including houses, huts, cattle sheds, and essential infrastructure.

According to official data, the Jammu Division bore the major brunt with 1,591 fully damaged houses, 4,326 severely damaged, 9,125 partially damaged kutcha houses, and 2,991 partially damaged pucca houses. In addition, 3,540 huts and cattle sheds were destroyed, and 151 people sustained injuries. The government said ₹5,246.47 lakh has been paid in compensation so far in the region.

In the Kashmir Division, 12 houses were fully damaged, 44 severely damaged, and 845 partially damaged, besides 79 huts and cattle sheds. One person lost his life, and one was injured. The total compensation released in the division stands at ₹191.44 lakh.

The government said relief camps and medical camps were set up across affected areas to provide shelter, food, and essentials to the flood-hit families.

It added that power, water supply, and road connectivity were restored immediately to ensure normalcy.

“The rehabilitation and restoration of public property, including roads and bridges, have been initiated as per the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs,” the reply said.(KNS)
