Bijbehara, Aug 13 : Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said that the Union Territory has seen steady development in its sports infrastructure over the past five years, leading to increased youth participation in various sporting activities.

Addressing an event during the Bijbehara Premier League match in Anantnag, Sinha stated that facilities have been established across different regions of J&K and that the administration intends to continue expanding them.

According to Sinha, the number of youth involved in sports in the region has risen significantly—from 2.5 lakh five years ago to around 40 lakh today. He said this growth reflects the increasing interest of young people in sports, not only as a recreational activity but also as a potential career path.

The Lieutenant Governor pointed to the support from the central government, especially under the Prime Minister’s Development Package, as a key factor in these developments.

He also referred to the introduction of a new sports policy aimed at ensuring fair selection processes based on merit for positions in the sports department and the sports council.

Sinha said the government is taking steps to promote a drug-free environment through engagement in sports and other activities.

He emphasized that active youth participation can contribute to a more stable and forward-moving society.

During the event, he also mentioned the recent Amarnath Yatra, noting that over 4.14 lakh pilgrims visited the shrine this year. He said the smooth conduct of the yatra could have a positive effect on the region’s tourism and image.

He also recalled the hosting of Legends Cricket League matches in Jammu and Kashmir after more than three decades, saying it marked a step towards the return of high-profile sporting events to the region.(KNS)
