Gulmarg Feb 01 : Gulmarg, the famous ski resort in Jammu and Kashmir, is witnessing tourist revival this winter season, driven by record-breaking snowfall, with officials on Sunday highlighting a major economic resurgence for the Kashmir valley.
The influx marks a significant recovery for the Valley’s crucial tourism sector, which had faced considerable challenges in the preceding year.
Speaking to News Agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), Assistant Director of Tourism for Gulmarg, Tahir Wani, said the direct link between the weather and local livelihoods. “This is not just about tourism; it is about survival and prosperity for thousands of families here. The snow brings work for hotel staff, guides, pony wallahs, sledge operators, and everyone connected to this industry,” Wani said.
He said that hotels are fully booked and all tourism services are operating at peak capacity, creating widespread economic activity.
Wani however said the intense pressure on infrastructure, particularly the gondola and ski lifts, due to the massive footfall of both Indian and foreign tourists. “Our technical teams are working round the clock on maintenance. Ensuring these facilities run smoothly is paramount, as every hour directly supports the local economy,” he stated.
The administration’s focus, he added, has shifted to intensive ground management–regulating traffic, crowds, and commercial activities–to ensure visitor safety and a seamless experience.
The heightened activity in Gulmarg follows a difficult period for Kashmir’s tourism in 2025, underscoring the sector’s critical role in the Kashmir’s economy.
Officials are now advocating for sustainable tourism practices to ensure the long-term health of the destination and the community it supports he added. (KNS)
