Srinagar, Aug 7: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suspended nine office-bearers of its Anantnag district unit and stripped them of their organisational responsibilities for allegedly organising and participating in an unauthorised Tiranga rally during which objectionable slogans targeting women were reportedly raised.
According to a party order issued by BJP Anantnag district president Rakesh Koul, the rally was held at Housing Colony, Khanabal, on August 5 without obtaining approval from either the district party leadership or the civil administration.
The party said it had taken serious note of the alleged derogatory remarks made against women during the event, describing the conduct as inconsistent with the BJP’s discipline, dignity and core values.
The disciplinary action, the order said, followed consultations with BJP state general secretary (organisation) Ashok Koul, state general secretary Anwar Khan, state spokesperson and Anantnag in-charge Altaf Thakur, and members of the district core committee.
Those suspended are district general secretary Nisar Ahmad Bhat, district secretaries Khursheed Ahmad Sofi, Aabida Rafiq and Nisar Ahmad Hakeem, Shangus constituency president Irshad Ahmad Malik, Pahalgam constituency president Waheed Ahmad Itoo, Mohd Maqbool Ganie, Kisan Morcha district secretary Feroz Ahmad Hajam and Mahila Morcha district secretary Sabrooza Akhter.
The party also suspended their primary membership pending the outcome of an internal inquiry.
The order further clarified that Alveer Ahmad Dar and Fancy Akhter are not members of the BJP’s Anantnag district unit and do not hold any organisational position in the party.(KNS).
