Baramulla, Feb 13 : The Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla on Friday urged parents to play a proactive role in ensuring road safety, particularly by not allowing minors to drive vehicles, citing the rising risk of road accidents.
Speaking to the news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) on the sidelines of a Road Safety Awareness programme organised by the Chief Education Office in the district, the DC said parents must refrain from giving two-wheelers or other vehicles to underage children and ensure that basic traffic norms are strictly followed. He emphasised that wearing helmets and seat belts should become a daily habit to reduce fatalities.
“With the new academic session starting soon, parents must take responsibility and ensure that minors are not allowed to ride bikes. Road safety begins at home,” he said, adding that schools, the ARTO department, and the district administration are continuously working to sensitise students and the public about traffic rules.
The DC also highlighted infrastructure issues on the outskirts of Baramulla, particularly a stretch affected by waterlogging after rainfall due to poor drainage. He said efforts are underway to construct a cross-drainage system to permanently resolve the problem.
Reiterating that the objective of traffic enforcement is to save lives and not to penalise people, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to motorists and families to make road safety a regular topic of discussion at home. “Traffic accidents not only endanger individuals but also impact society as a whole,” he added.
