Darrang (Assam), Sep 14 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress during a public rally in Assam’s Darrang district, accusing the party of siding with infiltrators and even supporting Pakistan-backed terrorists.
Addressing the gathering at Mangaldoi, Modi said that instead of backing Indian soldiers, Congress had consistently chosen to stand with forces working against the country. “Those who shelter infiltrators will have to pay the price; the nation will not forgive them,” he said, stressing that the BJP was committed to protecting Assam from encroachment and demographic change.
The Prime Minister alleged that previous Congress governments in the state allowed encroachments on farmers’ land and religious places, while the BJP-led government had reclaimed lakhs of acres from infiltrators. He also praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for eviction drives and land recovery measures.
Linking his speech to Assam’s cultural heritage, Modi invoked Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika, accusing the Congress of insulting him when he was conferred the award. “The people of this land should ask the Congress why they insulted Bhupen Da,” he said.
During the rally, Modi also laid the foundation stone for projects worth ₹570 crore, including the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, a nursing college, and a GNM school. He said the facilities would improve healthcare infrastructure and create opportunities for youth.
He announced that GST would undergo “next-generation reforms,” with rate cuts effective from the first day of Navratri, making daily-use items cheaper. Modi further highlighted Assam’s rapid economic growth, noting that the state achieved a 13 per cent growth rate, which he linked to the “double-engine government” at the Centre and in the state.
This was Modi’s first visit to Assam since the conclusion of Operation Sindoor, which he described as a major success against cross-border terror camps.(KNS).
